Insomnia is one of many known sleep disorders that plague a lot of people. It like sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy encompass conditions that can negatively affect regular sleep. Insomnia which literally means lack of sleep is the most pervasive form of sleep deprivation. It is true that almost everyone has stayed up awake in bed at one time or the other. Some others rather than sleep through the night wake up and cannot go back to sleep. But insomnia is more than that. It is lacking sleep constantly. Whatever form it exhibits today insomnia will eventually take its toll on the health of the sufferer. The most common side effect of insomnia is exhaustion which leads to poor concentration with attendant results.

Insomnia usually comes in one of two forms chronic or acute. The acute form of insomnia is temporary, lasting only a short time, usually a month. Insomnia of this form is usually due to certain events in the individuals’ life. Situations like jet lag from traveling, losing a loved one or the end of a relationship can trigger this acute insomnia. It usually rights itself with a return to normalcy and as the situation improves itself so does normal sleep.

The chronic form of insomnia on the other hand lasts more than a month. Insomnia of this form is usually the result of some other underlying factor from a bigger condition. Psychological and physical situations are usually the culprits and can distort sleep and wreak havoc. This requires medical care from a doctor and the solution can be found by treating the larger underlying factor or factors. Sleep usually returns when these factors are dealt with.

Although chronic insomnia is usually results from other underlying factors it can also by itself be a condition. It can be wrought by personal biological factors like increased metabolism of the brain or very high temperature from the body.

Insomnia whether acute or chronic can be the resultant effects of too much caffeine, odd sleeping hours, or smoking excessively. Other factors could be stress in our life or depression. Treating insomnia can be done by following proper sleeping habits. Doctors will sometimes conduct a test to determine the root causes of chronic insomnia or sleep apnea. For acute insomnia sleep aides could sometimes be applied. The best solution is usually to seek professional advice.
