Insomnia is a growing problem among today population and quick remedies are the order of the day. People want instant results for any health problem that they face and so drug companies have come up with over the counter sleep aids that help you fall asleep. While they seem like magic pills it is important to understand how these medications work in order to give you a good nights sleep. The sleeping pills which one buys from over the counter can be used to help treat insomnia for a short while but are not advisable for people with chronic sleep disorders. Sleep problems that are chronic have to be treated with the help of a sleep specialist. Sleeping pills, work by depressing the central nervous system or the brain.
If the person is experiencing sleep problems it is good to find out what the underlying cause of sleeplessness is, then try to work in eliminating that cause naturally. If the sleep problem is temporary and is not an ongoing problem then most people want a quick fix and that is when they turn to prescription medicine or towards over the counter remedies. Common antihistamines that are used to treat insomnia are diphenhydramine, dimenhydrinate, doxylamine, and pyrilamine. These drugs induce sleep and should not be used for more than 2 or 3 days at a stretch because the body can develop tolerance towards them easily. Since these are basically sedatives they leave unsettling side effects like drowsiness, fatigue, headaches, nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort and vomiting etc.
Due to their side effects and since they are over the counter if the person taking them has a known case of some other problem like diabetes or such then they should consult their doctor before trying such medication. Mixing alcohol and antihistamines can prove to be hazardous to the health. People with known medical conditions must talk to their physician before they use any over the counter sleep aid. It is also advisable to talk to a doctor if you have a continuous sleep problem that does not go away even after 2 or three days of antihistamines. Pregnant or lactating women and people who consume alcohol must try and avoid these medications until they have talked and been advised by their physician.
