Bipolar disorder is also known as manic-depressive illness. People with this disorder experience moments of depression and anxiety of varying degrees of severity and can fluctuate between mania and depression. The illness is seen mostly in people who have a family history of mental illness or depression. People who experience mania are known to have reduced sleep. While this is not good for the condition it is also noticed that often the person doesn't realize that they are not getting enough sleep and attribute it to their condition, which may not be the case. People with bipolar disorder are known to have delicate internal clocks; any disruption to the already delicate balance can trigger episodes of mania and aggravate or worsen the condition.Bipolar disorder patients fluctuate between depression where they can have bouts of hypersonic or go through a manic episode, which is characterized by insomnia. Improper sleep patterns added to the already existing problem can lead to other complications like fibromyalgia.
It is mandatory that people with bipolar disorder maintain proper sleep hygiene and a regular sleep routine so as to not upset their circadian rhythm and aggravate their episodes of depression and mania. As with most disorders the family and friends are equally a part of the whole process of understanding the disorder and trying to intervene the onset of any episode of depression or mania. Some methods of aggressive sleep routines have helped these people where in one tries to avoid light and sound for over 14 hours or so at night and trying to get the body clock of the bipolar disorder patient into a set rhythm and once the routine has been established then reducing the hours to suit the patients needs can help them sleep better. More often than not since this is related to chemical imbalance in the brain and hence is treated with antidepressants.
For those patients suffering with insomnia scheduling their sleep cycle can help but when they are hypersonic then regulating their daytime naps and sleep schedule can help avert nighttime sleeplessness. Patients of bipolar disorder have a delicate mental balance so care must be taken to maintain their rhythm in terms of schedules and routines, which when they are going through one of the episodes can trigger or aggravate the condition. Care should be taken to see that most of the time their social rhythm is not upset because it has been noticed that prior to an episode most of them have had some kind of social rhythm disturbance like a late night or anxiety about a family member and such.
