Sleep disorders effect many people of all ages and races. It has been found to be increasingly prevalent in youngsters but earlier sleep problems were only considered to be the problem of the elderly. While there is some amount of truth to the fact that as we age the amount of sleep is reduced it is not necessarily the situation. Elderly people need as much sleep as their body requires and like all normal people sleep deprivation can leave them feeling unwell and ill. Each person's sleep requirements are different from the next. On an average a person needs about 8 hours of sleep. Insomnia can be caused due to a lot of things like stress, ill health or disruptive sleep wake cycles and so on. If you are experiencing insomnia then it is good to talk to your physician to rule out medication or alcohol abuse or any other related issues that may be triggering insomnia. Simple changes in lifestyle could alter the upset sleep cycle and set it back to normalcy.
Sleep apnea is a disorder that is caused due to obesity, physical deformities of the nasal or oral passages and is accompanied by loud snoring which is often followed by disrupted sleep due to collapsed air passages that make it difficult to breath. Treatment for this could be in the form of weight loss or with the aid of machine called the CPAP, which helps in getting air through the passages for smooth uninterrupted breathing. Sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, cardiac conditions, heart attack and such so it is good to talk to your physician if you feel you have these symptoms. Restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder are known to be the major cause of insomnia in elderly people. RLS and PLMD are disorders that give the patient an urge to move their legs and limbs, respectively, in order to get rid of the sensation.
This is often seen in people when they are inactive like sitting or sleeping and can be felt as frequently as every 20 or 40 seconds. Restful sleep is deprived and there are natural lifestyle changes like light stretching exercises or massages that can help but talking to the physician about it and seeing how it fits your medical history to warrant a treatment that does not upset your regular routine maybe the best way to go. It has been noted that poor sleep in the elderly can lead to early death. Treatment for the elderly should be given with care taking into consideration their medical history and current medical condition and the medications that they are using and to find out whether those or something else is the cause of their sleep disruptions and treat them accordingly without affecting their health and current conditions.
