People who suffer from sleep apnea seem to be at a higher risk for heart attacks than normal people. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder (mostly seen in obese or over weight individuals) that prevents the person from breathing freely due to an obstruction in the upper airway passages. The obstruction is characterized by loud snoring and patients with this problem often have difficulty taking in the required amount of oxygen to keep the blood oxygen level at the optimum thus making them gasp for breath and waking up several times sometimes as much as 300 times during one night. This leads to sleep deprivation and causes complications like high blood pressure and heart disease. Sleep apnea is treated with the use of CPAP machine, which allows the air into the air passages at different pressures so as to disable the obstruction and let the person breath normally. It has been noticed that sleep apnea patients who were under the CPAP treatment had lesser chances of heart attacks and heart related diseases.
Studies have shown that sleep apnea can lead to heart problems and in conditions where the person already had a known heart condition the problem was worsened. It was noted that the conditions in heart patients had worsened and the chances of heart attacks that are fatal or non fatal were tripled if the severe obstructive sleep apnea was left untreated. CPAP treatment to help the sleep apnea patient breath better helped in regulating the oxygen flow to the heart and thus reduced the risk of heart diseases in most patients. It has been noticed that there is a relationship to sleep disordered breathing and coronary conditions. In preexisting conditions of known heart problems it has been seen that sleep disorders like sleep apnea can aggravate the condition and if not then there is a risk of developing heart problems.
There are a lot of people who are undiagnosed for sleep apnea and can go for a very long time without treatment. If you feel any symptoms of sleep apnea then it is good to get yourself some medical attention to rule out other complications from it. Most people do not get treatment because they do not view snoring as a problem and think that it is just a product of good sound sleep. Infect it must be noted that snoring could mean there is some underlying problem that has to be checked and may also be a marker for some other health condition. People who have sleep apnea that has not been diagnosed often do not realize that they have a sleep disorder because their fragmented sleep is not something that they are aware of. If there are any symptoms of sleep apnea that one experiences then get the needed medical attention at once is crucial to avoid worsening other conditions (if you have any) or leading to other problems that might stem from it.
