Sweating is an unpleasant but a required body mechanism. Night sweat can be really frustrating and can leave you feeling sleepless and disturbing your sleep. While it is not a disorder it can be a cause for sleeplessness or frequent awakenings during the night. People who sweat profusely during the night often wake up with damp clothes on them and around them and this can be really unpleasant for them and for the people sleeping next to them. There may be many causes for a person to sweat at night and one of the most common and probably the one that most people are aware of is the menopausal night sweating. Night sweats are common in woman who is menopausal and sometimes it is also seen in men who are going through the male menopausal state called andropause. People who have diabetes can also exhibit this form of sweating at night.
Fever due to some infection can also bring about nighttime sweat. Some of the other not well-known causes could be that a person has an underlying sleep disorder like sleep apnea. If the person who experiences night sweat also has loud snoring and sleeplessness at night or day time sleepiness then the cause of this could be sleep apnea so it is best for them to get themselves evaluated for a sleep disorder. Spicy food or sometimes some prescription drugs can also cause nighttime sweating. Treatment could start by first analyzing what is causing eh night sweats and if it is something like food or an external cause then that should be modified.
Most often than not night time sweating is an indicator of an underlying condition like a sleep disorder or a health problem so a doctor must be consulted if there is no evident cause that is obvious to you. To analyze that getting a sleep specialist or a doctor to do a sleep study can help to some extent. As with all other sleep problems a change in the lifestyle could help to some extent. Try to make the bedroom and the surroundings cool and pleasant and not warm so as to avoid the probability of sweating. Taking a shower before going to bed can also help by reducing the chances of having a night sweat. Trying to keep the body temperature down by being in a cool bedroom, or drinking something cold like a glass of water or a glass of juice can help.
