Sleepiness during the day maybe a result of insufficient sleep during the night. This may be a sleep disorder but there are lots of people who do not have a known sleep disorder but still feel excessively sleepy during the daytime. This kind of excessive sleepiness is called hypersomnolance and most of the time it is due to an unknown cause. Idiopathic hypersomnolance is an excessive daytime sleepiness disorder with no known cause. People who have these symptoms are often very sleepy during the day and tend to fall asleep often. While the symptoms look similar to that or narcoleptics this is not the case because in narcolepsy the patient feels a little refreshed after the nap but for people with hypersomnolance the nap is not refreshing in the least and moreover they feel sleepy after a few minutes again. Studies using the EEG have shown that these people experience numerous non-REM stages during the course of the night.
Suggestions that this may be due to viral infections or pneumonia or other disorders are also rife, but as mentioned earlier there seem to be no actual cause for this disorder. People with this disorder not only have excessive daytime sleepiness they also oversleep during the night. Most often this disorder is confused with other sleep disorders like narcolepsy and sleep apnea while it does share some symptoms from these disorders it is also characterized by the fact that these people are not really sleep deprived infect they seem to sleep more than the needed amount.
The condition can make one still feel drowsy after a long nap and can make it difficult to lead a normal life. There are some forms of treatment that can help these people overcome this excessive sleepiness and get on with their life. If you suspect that you or someone you know has this condition then it is best to seek medical advise like with all other sleep disorders. This disorder can be there for prolonged periods of time and can affect the regular functioning of an individual and hamper their life. Since this is a disorder with no known cause and since the symptoms match so many other disorders it is liable to be misdiagnosed so it is good to go to a sleep specialist to have yourself evaluated for the possibility of having idiopathic hypersonic.
