Sleep disorders are not only accompanied with mood swings, depression anxiety and other mental ailments they are also known to bring with them a package of other health problems. Studies show that people who are sleep deprived have a lot of stomach or gastrointestinal disorders. While it is not known whether the sleep disorder causes these issues or if these issues cause a sleep disorder but they both seem to be intrinsically involved. People suffering from heartburn or indigestion have often complained of poor sleep. While this maybe a temporary situation there are other causes that could lead to sleep disorders like the IBS (or irritable bowel syndrome). Frequent need to use the bathroom, stomach aches, heartburn and indigestion are also linked with sleep problems. Trying to get good nights sleep is the key to this and to do that getting to the root cause of the problem if there is a health issue is the best way to follow up.
Having a good sleep hygiene can help ease these problems to a great extent as always. Sleeplessness can be attributed to any number of causes in a person from poor eating habits, depression, stress, health condition etc, all of which lead to some amount of sleep deprivation or insomnia. People with insomnia have difficulty sleeping, they wake up too frequently during the night, have insufficient satisfactory sleep and wake up feeling tired and not refreshed. Trying to find the cause if there is an underlying medical condition can ease these symptoms. Sometimes people on medication or alcoholics also have this problem of insomnia. For all these while there is some amount of medical attention that has to be given consideration the path to achieving a good nights sleep can also start with simple lifestyle changes that can help a person eliminate some of the other causes of sleeplessness.
Maintaining good sleep hygiene is probably the best way to go when trying to achieve this. Having a fixed bedtime routine, trying to avoid stimulants or gastrointestinal irritants before bedtime, having a soothing and relaxing routine before bedtime like a warm cup of milk or a warm and relaxing bath, avoiding caffeine which is a stimulant and alcohol (which can cause drowsiness initially but can disrupt sleep later on in the night), trying to have a stress free atmosphere in the bedroom and only warm and inviting ambience in the bedroom can all help get a good nights sleep. For people with known gastrointestinal problems trying to avoid food irritants, eating at a regular time at night and avoiding overeating, having light meals and those which help with sleep like diary products, turkey etc, avoiding caffeine, smoking, alcohol and exercising everyday preferably 5 to 6 hours before bedtime can all help in having a better sleep at night.
