Very little attention is warranted to sleep and is viewed as mere routine. There is more to sleep than just lying down and closing ones eyes. This is the time that the brain takes to recharge itself and reenergize from the vagaries of the day. Sleep is not a passive state of mind infect it is quite an active cycle that is taking place in the brain. Hence sleep deprivation cannot only lead to physical problems due to exhaustion but can also cause other mental illnesses. If you feel drowsy in the morning then probably you did not have a good nights rest. The National institute of health sites that there is a greater probability of one having sleep problems if he/she is diagnosed with a mental condition or has psychiatric problems like depression, anxiety etc. Added to that, sleep deprivation can only augment this condition than alleviate it. So if you have a psychiatric problem or known disorder then it is more likely than not that you also have a sleep problem.
Generally sleep deprivation causes distraction, poor coordination and retentive capacity and also increases mood swings, this is general for normal people, and for people under treatment for mental illnesses this can only worsen the already existing condition. If you suspect that you have a sleep disorder or are being sleep deprived then there are a lot of ways to approach the issue, first of which is trying to assess whether or not you have a sleep problem and if so then trying to get a specialist to take a look at it for you to be able to diagnose it accurately and provide the necessary treatment, secondly if you are already under care for some other problem then it is good to talk to your physician and the sleep specialist to come to a common mode of treatment that will not effect your current treatment and also help with the sleep disorder.
If you do have a sleep disorder it is mandatory to know that most of them are treatable with lifestyle changes and some with medicine depending on the severity of the case. Talk to your primary medical provider to arrive at a suitable solution for you. While this is one way of tackling the issue at hand there are methods that one can do by oneself by practicing healthy sleep hygiene. Having a set bedtime routine and sticking to it without upsetting your normal schedule trying to eat healthy and have an exercise regimen that is approved by your doctor is also one way to go. The best method that can be developed over time and works consistently for almost all patients of sleep disorders is to have a consistent bedtime routine.
