Each year millions of people suffer from sleep apnea but only a few get the opportunity to get tested immediately. Researchers in Canada have come up with a unique home monitoring system called the home oximetry machine that measures the oxygen level during the night for people with sleep apnea or OSA. While the traditional lab tests take a long time and have a multitude of tests like the polysomnographs and other complicated lab tests that are done in the hospital this is a relatively simple procedure that can be done at home. Hence the test results from the home based test and the lab tests were compared for the same lot of patients studied and it was found to be accurate with the hospital results while at the same time being a fraction of the cost. The results of this test could mean that many people will have access to diagnosing their condition faster than having to wait for appointments at sleep centers to diagnose their problems and to get medical attention faster than with the traditional method of testing.
For most of the people suffering from sleep apnea the air passages collapse during sleep and thus restrict the flow of oxygen into the air passage thus causing breathing infrequencies or pauses in breathing without the person realizing it. There are three forms of Sleep Apnea Obstructive sleep apnea or commonly known as OSA, Central Sleep Apnea or CSA and Mixed sleep apnea. Of these OSA is the most common and people with this condition have other symptoms like dryness of the throat, snoring, choking or gasping for air, sleeplessness. So far the treatments being used are the CPAP, which helps in sending continuous air to the air passages at a varied pressure so as to help the patient get a constant supply of oxygen into his system.
The other common form of treatment for these patients is BiPAP, which is similar in function to the CPAP only that it has two different pressure levels that it uses and is generally used to treat more severe cases of sleep apnea. This study for home diagnosis of the condition is a significant step into trying to reduce the waiting list for patients who wish to get tested in the hospital labs and also enable one to reach the diagnosis in the convenience of their home and get medical attention faster than they would have if they had to wait for a lab test and get them started off on a treatment program faster.
