Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden instances where the person falls asleep without any warning. The disorder has to do with an imbalance in the brain in producing the hormone hypo cretin. Due to this the person also has cataplexic attacks that are characterized by involuntary loss of muscle control and while the person is fully aware they cannot move a muscle and seem paralyzed. Studies conducted by injecting antibodies from known narcoleptics into the blood stream of mice seemed to induce narcoleptic like symptoms in mice. Scientist are trying to understand the genetic predisposition of people with this kind of disorder by studying the auto antibody response which may be a window into understanding the genetic implications of this condition and how the immune system of these people works as against that of a normal healthy person.
This may be a step towards trying to find the underlying or the root cause of this condition. The study might well lead to the understanding of the link between the autoimmune responses that trigger the loss of the production of hypo cretin in the neurons of narcoleptics that leads to narcolepsy. With promising results in the study this may well lead to an assay or a lab test where one could find the cause of the loss of hypo cretin in the neurons and what conditions are predisposed to this scenario can well mean that an early diagnosis of onset of narcolepsy and also a probable method of countering the effects this may have at an earlier stage to prevent the advancement of the condition is in order.
