When viewed from a general point of view sleep seems to be a relatively inconsequential habit that really has no impact on the day to day functioning other than just giving one some rest between hours of waking. While it is not inconsequential and is not only just rest to the body sleep has some major impact on the entire functioning of our body system. It is during sleep that most of our human batteries are charged and recharged, from damaged cell repair to boosting the immune system or recharging the brain it is all done during sleep. People tend to experience sleep problems of all kinds at some point or the other of their life. Sleep problems can be either sleep deprivation or excessive sleep both of which fall into the category of a sleep disorder. Sleep cycles vary from individual to individual and any change in a regular pattern for that person can mean a sleep disorder. Sleep disorders can be mild and temporary or severe and one's that need medical attention.
Sleep problems that are mild and temporary are the ones that go away after the situation that caused them passes like stress. Trauma or illness. Other types of disorders may be latent and surface due to illness or some kind of hormonal imbalance or are disorders that progressively worsen and have been left undetected. The types of sleep disorders are many almost 700 of them but all of them can be broadly classified into four categories. 1. Where a person has trouble falling or staying asleep. 2. Difficulty in staying awake. 3. Difficulty with the sleep/wake cycle and finally 4.difficulty maintaining a steady sleep state with frequent interruptions. Most forms of sleep problems maybe situational and can be cured by trying to get rid of the situation that is the cause of the condition but if there is a persistent sleep problem then it may not be due to an external factor or an emotional one in all probability it may have some underlying medical cause and to rule that out it is a must that one has to find a sleep specialist or a medical professional who can accurately diagnose and treat it without much time lag.
In general some sleep disorders do not have a cure like narcolepsy but help can be found in the form of lifestyle or habitual changes that can help generate a good pattern of sleep/wake cycles, a good nutrition that enables you to control any adverse effects some kinds of food have on the body and also to get some form of therapy to ease some of the anxiety and relax the mind and allow for the flow of good endorphins to ensure a better sleep routine. Sleep problems when neglected can get worse, understanding what the symptoms are and trying to mitigate them accordingly with the help of these steps or under the guidance of a medical professional can help combat this problem.
