There has been a lot of buzz recently about the need to get good sleep and quality sleep rather than quantity and so on. While all these are true it is not yet known why sleep patterns vary from one individual to the other. While some people can get by with about 6 hours of sleep some do not feel refreshed or well rested even after a 9 or 10 hour sleep cycle. Each person body clock works in a different manner depending on his or her body constitution. While it is established that the body needs to recharge after every stressful day through sleep it is not known as to how the body reenergizes itself during sleep. On an average the body needs about 8 hours to recharge and function at its optimum, again it is not known what the process of recharging is but it is known that the body uses these periods of inactivity to boost metabolism for the next 24 hours.
On the surface the role of sleep seems to be a sedentary and non-active process but in reality the process of sleep is not a steady cycle in itself. There are different stages of the sleep cycle that one experiences during the night. Sleep studies have revealed the sleep is divided into 4 stages. The first two stages are the Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep cycles where the body is asleep but the eyes are moving when closed and this stage is the phase where one experiences dreams and is also known as the light stage of sleep. The non REM sleep is the third and the fourth stage of the sleep cycle and this is the one where the brain is in a deep sleep state. This stage doesn't show any eye movement and is reached after 2-3 hours of the onset of sleep.
Throughout the night the human brain vacillates between these stages of sleep with varying frequency and as the night progresses there is a significant reduction in the Non REM sleep and lengthening of the REM sleep cycles. Maintaining a good sleep hygiene can help reduce the onset of any sleep disorders and following simple lifestyle changes and behavioral changes can make the body adjust to any drastic changes without effecting the sleep pattern and leading to sleep problems. Good sleep hygiene is also good in maintaining the inner body clock and not topples the circadian rhythm. Poor quality and quantity of sleep can affect the body mentally, emotionally and physically so maintaining a routine that ensure a good sleep routine can help the body in many ways.
