During sleep the body remains inactive but the mind is still working at a regular pace, maybe not at the frenzied pace of the day but it is still working to lock away the memories of the day and recharge the brain cells for the next wake cycle that is to come. A recent Harvard study tried to see what the impact of a sleep cycle might have on the memory of a person. While trying to see if the person can remember what one has memorized the previous day it showed that the brain did not lose any data the following day. This could throw some light into the fact that the brain works at retaining some of the information gathered during the course of the day and to consolidate it. Sleep deprived people are studied to show the effect of memory on these individuals and it was found that the brain functions differently for different aspects of memory depending on what the memory is registering.
Though there are relatively different studies that analyze trying to recollect faces or numbers or any other data, it still showed that the level of recognition or memory was significantly flawed in these individuals who were sleep deprived to know that sleep does play a major role in building memory. The tests given to sets of people who were well rested and those who were sleep deprived showed that in all the tasks the sleep-deprived people performed poorer than the ones who were well rested. As this comes as no surprise to most researches the tests were conducted under the use of fMRI scans to check which part of the brain was actively working or not working, whichever the case may be, for these people while performing those tasks.
Numerical tasks controlled by the prefrontal lobe of the brain showed significant reduction in activity during an fMRI scan for these individuals while the tests for the verbal tasks, showed some activity in the prefrontal lobe and increased activity in the parietal lobe. With a series of tests that try to assess the activity levels of different parts of the brain it was seen that lack of sleep effects different tasks for the brain to manage in different ways, but that the overall study shows that there is a significant effect of the optimal functionality of the brain for those who are sleep deprived. Sleep is now known to convert new memories into long time memories. There is an ongoing debate as to which type of sleep is good in consolidating memories and most favors the deep sleep or the Non REM sleep, as the stage but REM sleep may also be important in processing other types of memory. Memory is divided into three stages, stabilizing, consolidating and recalling. The second stage of memory occurs during sleep.
