Studies now show that you should not only say no to alcohol if you plan to drive but also when you plan to get a fitful sleep and not have a resultant sleep disorder. Alcohol is known to sedate a person after the initial stimulation but there is more to the sleep alcohol relationship than that. It is known now that alcohol can progressively worsen sleep deprivation especially if you are already having trouble sleeping. Alcohol is known to worsen conditions like insomnia, sleep apnea. Men who consumed alcohol on a regular basis are known to develop sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) and the condition seems to progressively worsen and lead to chronic disorders like sleep apnea. Women are found to be at a lesser risk probably because of their body's constitutional tolerance to alcohol, which is higher than that of men. If a person suffers from sleep problems alcohol is only going to exacerbate the condition and it is known that snoring can worsen with alcohol consumption. Snoring that is normal can be augmented to sleep apnea with the alcoholism.
People with sleep apnea losing the ability to breathe for a few seconds and has to gasp for breath during the night. This is due to obstruction in the air passages and can be very exhausting and deprive a person of sleep. If a person who is known to have sleep apnea takes alcohol the relaxed body state that he is in due to the alcohol may not awaken him when he is indeed gasping for breath and thus can kill the person so it is dangerous for one to consume alcohol when they have a known sleep disorder like sleep apnea. Use of alcohol affects both stages of sleep the REM and the slow wave or non REM sleep stages. Alcohol is known to effect the neurotransmitters in the body that regulate the sleep cycle in a person, falling asleep, staying asleep and awakening are all effected due to alcohol.
People who are under treatment for sleep disorders and are under sleep medications should be especially careful in the use of and abuse of sleep medication and alcohol. Mixing sleeping pills and alcohol can be detrimental to one's life. There are a few rules that one has to go by when one is known to have a sleep disorder or to maintain a healthy life style so as to not allow it to lead to any sleep disorders. These rules are first and foremost to not drink in excess, not drink after dinner or several hours before bedtime, never use alcohol as a sleep aid, it can only aggravate an existing condition or can lead to a sleep disorder, and finally never mix alcohol and sleep medication it can be fatal.
