Alcohol has a dual reaction on the body with respect to sleep. It initially works as a sleep aid and then deprives one of deep sleep and early wakening. This is true for active alcoholics and for one's who have fallen off the wagon. Alcohol can act as a sedative and help the person fall asleep fast but at the same time it is known to make a person wake up after the initial stupor causing effect passes leaving them feeling tired, sleep deprived and along with it all the symptoms of sleep deprivation. To overcome this the person takes more alcohol and this becomes a vicious cycle. Alcoholics and those who have stopped drinking both have significant sleep problems. Most of the recovering alcoholics have a sleep onset problem more than the sleep maintenance issue. This could often be the cause of them becoming alcoholics again. Sometimes the reason for them becoming alcoholics could initially have been the same as when they are returning alcoholics.
While this is an issue most people don't realize that falling asleep fast is the only benefit of alcohol consumption and everything else later is just a worsening condition that is similar to insomnia or a worse sleep disorder. Recovering alcoholics have a tough time overcoming the symptoms of sleep deprivation and this is probably the last symptom that takes time to correct itself and this can be a long termed process for them. Sleep is probably the single most prominent cause for a relapse in recovering alcoholics too. Diagnosing a sleep disorder and its severity requires a series of tests that monitor sleep over a period of time, persistent sleep problems throughout the week can be an indicator of the severity of the disorder in a person. Plus insomniacs have different sets of problems, that range from onset of sleep, to sleep maintenance to waking problems, it is seen that alcoholics have persistent sleep disruptions for a long periods of time and their type of insomnia mostly has to do with problem falling asleep more than any other issue.
They do have sleep disruptions in-between but it is mostly the onset of sleep that is the problem with alcoholics. For most of them the alcohol dependency was actually a consequence of sleep onset problems. Maintaining a good sleep hygiene can be one step towards recovering from a sleep disorder and for recovering alcoholics trying to fit into a pattern that helps them get rid of alcohol dependency can take more than just good sleep hygiene and has more to do with maintaining a balance, tolerance, self examination and self control and constant vigil on part of the family and friends to prevent a relapse. Treatment for this can take a lot of time but there is no short cut since the stage of alcohol dependency may have been reached due to neglect in arriving at a proper solution to the predated sleep issue.
