When one is diagnosed with any disorder support from family and friends can help us a great deal and in order to do so it is a must that everyone concerned understands the problem at hand and tries to deal with it and support the patient. Narcolepsy is not a very known disorder and people often misunderstand it most of the time branding the patient as a lazy and mentally challenged person. It is not so. Awareness is now considerably great with the help of the internet and growing awareness of sleep disorders has changed this myth but there are still a lot of people who do not understand the condition and tend to be insensitive to the patient. People suffering from Narcolepsy have a tendency to fall asleep during the day without any significant warning. While there is no known cure for this as of now there are a lot of ways one can deal with it to minimize the number of naps that a person has during the day. While it is imperative that the person accepts that this is a neurological defect in the brain mechanism and is probably a genetically predisposed condition it is also improtant to understand that these people are normal and the need to sleep is not within their control.
Family and friends would be of great help if they tried to understand the issue at hand and not try and find alternative methods of combating the problem. Each individual can work around their situation depending on the support and the medical guidance from their physician. While there is some medication that can help to some extent like amphetamine or modifying lifestyle and diet changes can also help to a great degree and reduce the need to nap at irregular hours. If there is a possibility it is good for someone to help them drive to and from work or to drive them around since they might hurt themselves and others if they fall asleep at the wheel. Peers and higher ups in the work place should be made aware of the condition so that they can accommodate scheduled nap times for the patient so as to not interrupt their work as well as not force them to work around the problem, this could help in productivity on the patient's part. There are no cures as of now and though the study into this science is in its infancy there are a lot of support groups and help methods that can come in the form of everyday foods or habits that can help with the disorder. First and fore most should be to watch what makes a person drowsy and what keeps them alert. Food that makes one drowsy should be avoided during the day and taken preferably at night. Taking caffeine, alcohol and other stimulants is not advisable.
Some people feel that diary products help in inducing sleep so taking those during the day should be avoided. There is no tested method that works for everyone. Each individual will have his or her own way of dealing with the issue and if something works well for one person may not necessarily have the same result for the other. Getting information through forums and help sites and having interaction either during meetings in your area for narcoleptics or through a web forum can help as there may be a lot of tips and helpful suggestions that one can get from other patients. While the patient must understand the need to deal with the disorder on a day-to-day basis it is also mandatory that the family supports and understands this disorder. There are no magic pills to cure this problem and research is still in a fledgling state to come up with any concrete cure. If the family or friends can help then it may be in the form of driving the person around when they feel drowsy or helping them get around so that they don't harm themselves or injure others. There are many websites that give handy tips and help to these patients and checking these may help to some extent.
