How does one determine whether they have a sleep disorder or not and then once they find out that they do then how do they arrive at what disorder they have. There are a lot of methods of determining whether you have a sleep disorder or not and the most glaring of these would be to see if you experience excessive sleepiness or drowsiness during the day. Once that is established it is reason enough to see a physician to assess the severity of your condition. There are over 700 known sleep disorders and trying to make a diagnosis just based on the initial symptoms may not be the way to go since most of the disorders have common or overlapping symptoms. Narcolepsy has a lot of common symptoms with other disorders like Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome and other such disorders since all these are characterized by sleeplessness during the night and hence excessive drowsiness during the day.
Not only is excessive sleepiness during the day an embarrassing issue but it could actually be a condition that needs medical attention and if left untreated can be harmful to you and others since lot of people fall asleep during driving and or in the kitchen which can be hazardous not only to themselves but also to others. Meanwhile if a physician or a doctor is consulted then they may determine the cause and the diagnosis may lead to the conclusion that the disorder is treatable in which case it is beneficial to everyone. One factor that can set Narcolepsy apart is the fact that the disorder also has a common companion called Cataplexy, which is sudden loss of muscle control while the person is fully awake or alert. The fact that a person suffers from Narcolepsy has to do with the fact that it is caused by the absence of certain chemicals like Orexin or hypocretin, which helps a person stay awake during the day.
This is a neurological defect and has nothing to do with whether the person is lazy or has some mental illness. The disorder can be diagnosed with the help of a knowledgeable physician who can help run a few tests to determine the cause of excessive day time sleepiness in the patient and to arrive at a diagnosis. Initially simple tests can determine whether your sleepiness during the day or the sleeplessness during the night is a temporary issue due to some lifestyle changes or whether it is an indicator of a sleep disorder. Doing a simple test called the Epworth Sleep Scale or ESS, which rates your level of sleepiness, can do this. A score of 10 or more could mean that you indeed have a sleep disorder and must get medical attention. Assessing your ESS results can lead your doctor to decide that you might indeed be suffering from a sleep disorder and order other tests to determine the actual problem, severity and the probable treatment for the condition.
