Insomnia can broadly be categorized into three types, one where the person finds it difficult to sleep, second where they fall asleep fast but keep waking up and not be able to sleep continuously and finally waking up too early and not being able to fall asleep again. An average person needs about 7 to 9 hours of good sleep (depending on individual). Insomnia in itself is not a disorder but most of the time is a by-product of a sleep disorder. The most common symptoms of people who complain of insomnia are that they feel unrepressed in the morning, sleeplessness at night and sleepiness or drowsiness during the day, lack of concentration and energy and inability to focus on anything well. While it can be caused due to sleep disorders it can also be a product of other day-to-day occurrences like stress or trauma or anxiety etc. Based on the severity of the symptoms and the length they are experienced for insomnia is categorized into 3 types, transient (that lasts a few days), short-term (that lasts for a few weeks) and chronic (that lasts for more than a month).
While transient and short-term insomnia occur due to some immediate stress or anxiety or trauma they are temporary and soon the symptoms will disappear. Chronic insomnia on the other hand is due to an underlying condition and can be a window to some deep mental or physical disorder. While that is so it may also be due to some behavioral patterns like abuse of alcohol, excessive intake of caffeine and such. Treatment for transient or short-term insomnia may not be necessary since the complaint is short lived and may go away once the situation is altered. Like if a person is complaining of jetlag or has had some work related stress. Once this factor ease out then the insomnia also fades out. But while it lasts it may be good to watch any lifestyle changes that may help alter this state and alleviate the problem sooner.
Chronic insomnia on the other hand, may be due to underlying medical or psychological condition and treatment to combat this is warranted. To do that it must be first determined as to what is causing the problem, then working towards a treatment that helps cure the source of insomnia can be a good solution but otherwise taking sleeping pills with guidance and or changing some lifestyle or making some behavioral changes can help too. Therapies like relaxation therapy, aromatherapy and massage therapy, a good exercise program and other methods can help to some degree. Trying to not worry too much about being unable to fall asleep can also delay the process of falling asleep so diverting the mind by reading a book or listening to some soothing music can also help. Sleep is a vital process wherein the body rejuvenates and recharges itself to face the onslaught of another day. So it is a must that if there is a prolonged period of symptoms that point to insomnia then it is best to seek an experts medical advise.
