It may be peculiar to associate sleep disorders and children but good sleep habits are learnt very young. Having said that there is a lot of other factors that can have an effect on a child's sleep cycle and disrupt it. Most common sleep problems that we see in children are Sleep walking (somnambulism) and sleep terrors. Walking or moving about in sleep is known as somnambulism. This is seen in children who are nearing their puberty mostly. Sleepwalking is characterized by the fact that it occurs during the deep sleep state of the sleep cycle and these people are typically difficult to arouse, it may be a reaction to some sleep related breathing difficulty and or due to amnesia. Though it is not related or is the result of a sleep disorder some people are known to have underlying disorders. The episodes can be studied during a polysomnography test and are seen to occur at the onset of the 3rd and the 4th stage of sleep.
Sleepwalking is more predominant in children than in teens and adults and more so in boys than in girls. While they are not hazardous if the child ventures out of the house and the episodes are not too far between or come as often as every night then it is mandatory to seek medical help. Some of the measures one can take to make sure that an episode doesn't occur are to see that the sleepwalker is not overly tired. Excessively tired children can have a sleep walking episode, maintaining a healthy bedtime routine that relaxes and soothes the child, removing harmful objects from the sleep area, making sure the bedroom is in the ground floor and having a good psychiatric evaluation to eliminate probability of psychiatric problems can help to some extent. Hypnosis has helped some a great deal and medication with benzodizipines seems to work with good results in totally eliminating the episodes.
Sleep terrors are another child related sleep disorder that is characterized by arousal from deep sleep with loud screams or nighttime fear almost like terror. Children with this problem have episodes of intense terror during the night, followed by total amnesia during the episode and most of the episodes occur in the slow wave sleep. Polysomnograph tests show that these episodes occur during the onset of the 3rd or the 4th stage of sleep and can cause tachychardia during the episode and are not a known link to other disorders like epilepsy. Depending on the frequency of occurrence medical advice can be taken. If there is an occurrence every day then it might be right to take medical advise otherwise they may be a temporary phenomenon and can pass with age or with reassurance and a feeling of safety that one provides to the child while they are asleep.
