Bruxism: tooth clenching or tooth grinding during the night is also termed as bruxism. It is a movement disorder that has symptoms like the wear and tear of teeth, jaw or mandible pain, and can be so pronounced that it disrupts sleep. People with this disorder, depending on the severity and frequency of occurrence, can have dental problems that range from slow wear of the teeth, mandible problems and psychosocial deficiencies. General treatment for this disorder is to first evaluate the severity of the condition and assess how often the person has these episodes and having caps placed on the teeth so as to minimize the friction and when the involuntary grinding starts the caps help slip the jaws thus preventing any friction and hence no possibility of grinding and wear to the teeth.
Fibromyalgia: this is a neurological muscular disorder that is also known as muscular rheumatism. It has so many features that are similar to rheumatism and arthritis that it is sometimes confused for those disorders. The main symptom in this problem is the pain in the muscles and the soft tissue (tendons and ligaments). The pain is seen in various spots called the tender spots and can be diagnosed easily to eliminate the confusion between arthritis and such. Low dose of tri-cyclic antidepressants and light exercise and muscle stretching or relaxing movements are seen to help with this problem.
Hypersonic: As the name suggests this is a disorder where the person sleeps excessively and cannot be aroused easily and inspire of the excessive sleep still feels sleepy or drowsy when awake. This is a problem that is related to the central nervous system and people with this disorder sleep for a long time, are hard to wake up, still feel sleepy have prolonged deep sleep phases that can last up to 1-2 hours. Treatment typically starts with a sleep test or a polysomnography to determine the disorder and its severity. Since there is no known cause for this the treatment as of now is to have some change in the behavior, lifestyle and maintaining a good sleep hygiene. Reduced napping sessions, limiting them to a timeframe, then having a sleep cycle that is not too long and taking stimulants that can keep you awake for longer seem to work best.
