Sleep apnea a major sleep disorder that inhibits proper breathing during sleep. There are three types of apnea, obstructive, central and mixed of which the most common is Obstructive sleep apnea. Due to a fundamental dysfunction of the breathing pattern people often awake during the night resulting in disturbed sleep. Common symptoms and side effects of this disorder are loss of memory, blood pressure, impotency, and weight gain and cardiac problems. Fortunately this condition is treatable. Many organizations work to help people with sleep disorders of various kinds, but the American sleep apnea association, which is a non-profit organization, works to diagnose and treat people with sleep apnea disorder. The organization not only has people who work to treat this disorder but have support groups all over the country for the benefit of patients, and they also have forums where one can share any information regarding their condition or regarding the disorder in general.
Research is also a vital part of the organization that helps to work with scientific breakthroughs that can enhance the lives of people who suffer from this disorder. Tendency for obese men over 40 to be effected by Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common though now it is being seen in individuals who are younger and do not fall under this category also. With ever increasing research all over the globe and each new study deriving results that show how this disorder effects the heart, causes slow and silent brain damage are all alarming and a cause for more concentration on treating people with this condition. The American Sleep Apnea Association is doing its share to widen the scope of research to be able to battle this disorder and bring relief to its patients.
The ASAA has created a network called AWAKE (Alert, Well and Keeping Energetic referring to what untreated patients lack) which is spread over 200 groups in 45 states and works to provide self-help methods through support groups, seminars and regular meetings. Apart from research and self help groups the major form of treatment for these conditions vary from patient to patient. Primarily depending on the severity the patient is asked to make some simple lifestyle changes, use of oral appliances that aid in better breathing, use of the CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is the most effective so far. The machine works to push the air through the nasal and airway passages at a pressure that prevents the collapse of the air passages during sleep thus helping in the patient having a continuous supply of air during sleep. Sometimes surgery is the only recourse in these cases.
