Feeling groggy or drowsy during the day time can be due to poor night time sleep or can be an indication of an underlying sleep disorder. While this sense of drowsiness can be due to lack of proper sleep or due to a sleep disorder it can also be due to medications that one maybe taking at that moment. Try to consider all factors before coming to a conclusion as to the cause of sleepiness. While it may seem to be a trivial issue infects it is one that warrants serious consideration and immediate attention. Lots of people suffer from some form of temporary sleeplessness which may not be a cause for alarm and may go away after a while but constant symptoms of drowsiness and lack of proper sleep at night or disturbed sleep for a prolonged period of time must be looked into immediately by a practiced physician. People who tend to feel sleepy may not realize that they are feeling that way and some of the other factors that accompany this feeling are depression, loss of memory, lack of concentration and mood swings as also inefficiency.
Taking a symptomatic assessment one can arrive at the cause of this drowsy, groggy feeling and may be attributed to improper or insufficient sleep or due to some current medication that the person may be taking or due to some form of sleep disorder. Getting some tests to diagnose the cause can be vital to the cure. A polysomnograph can be good to evaluate the kind of sleep a person is getting and how severity of the case can be assessed with this method of studying the overnight sleep pattern. Before embarking on a series of other tests it is imperative that the person first try and change a few day to day habits to combat the sleepiness from his/her end initially. If it is suspected that the person has some sleep disorder like sleep apnea or narcolepsy then appropriate treatment should be underway, but whatever the diagnosis maybe people suffering with this problem can help themselves to a great extent if they made some immediate lifestyle changes like having a bedtime routine, change in their dietary pattern, avoiding alcohol and such beverages, harmful medications or sometimes some infections can also cause sleeplessness.
While all these factors are addressed if left untended to the medical treatment may not prove effective. So to make the most of the treatment you must also supplement it with these changes to get the maximum benefit. Sleepiness is not laziness on the effected person's part; it could be a latent cause that needs attention. So, while trying to put a finger on the problem it is good to follow the three steps to the solution, first to find the cause of the sleepiness, second is to get a treatment plan started out if the cause is a sleep disorder, if the diagnosis is indeterminate then maybe this is a temporary situation and will pass, while if it doesn't and the symptoms do not go away and there has been no conclusive diagnosis the final step should be to talk to your physician about your concerns and get the best medical assessment/ advise that can help you combat the problem.
