Excessive drowsiness or sleepiness during the day can be attributed to either a grossly disturbed sleep or some form of internal problem with the brain that can lead to poor sleep patterns. Whatever the reason the diagnosis can be one of the two things, either the sleep disorder Sleep Apnea or the neurological sleep disorder, Narcolepsy. While these can be the causes of excessive daytime sleepiness the problem called idiopathic hypersonic is a term used to refer to excessive sleepiness without any apparent reason. The diagnosis is arrived by eliminating the possibility of other disorders and when nothing else can be blamed for the symptoms it is termed as idiopathic hypersonic. Most common problems associated with people who show these symptoms are, unreflecting long sleep hours and naps, well noted family histories of this type of problem or any sleep disorders, seemingly a hereditary condition and finally most people who are diagnosed with this condition relate that the first time that they noticed this pattern is in their early teens or early twenties.
Since some of these factors especially the last feature is similar to narcolepsy it warrants a thorough examination and diagnosis to distinguish the fine line between these two problems. It is commonly confused with patients who also have another factor that causes a breathing difficulty during sleep where though they don't stop breathing each breath is a laborious effort and comes with great effort. This problem is treatable so it should be first ruled out or treated to then arrive at the hypersonic diagnosis. The upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) has to be eliminated as a cause before it is determined that the person actually suffers from Hypersonic. Like all other sleep disorders the problem may be temporary and may go away with time but if it is persistent and after thorough examination regular and similar causes like Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) are all ruled out then getting medical attention and proper diagnosis for this disorder must be sought.
While this is so, the other day to day routine and lifestyle changes that are needed for all the people suffering from sleep disorders is mandatory. It is also necessary to make sure that you are not taking any medication that has excessive sleepiness as a contra-indication. Medications can make one sedated or leave one feeling excessively drowsy or groggy. Talk to a medical professional before embarking on a drastic lifestyle change or when trying other treatments like therapy. Get yourself evaluated for other resulting diseases like cardiac, neurological and lung problems before taking up an exercise routine or other changes that can help your treatment program.
