The common term for sleeplessness is insomnia or vice versa. While this is not a disease or a disorder it is a situation where one does not get proper sleep and leaves one feeling exhausted and fatigued each morning. Insomniacs have restless night times and while excessive sleep can also leave one feeling wasted and exhausted the exhaustion felt by people who have insomnia is due to lack of a good night's sleep. Insomnia is a common term for sleeplessness that could be due to any sleep disorder or due to some disease. Sleeping pills or other medication may not be the course of action as the initial diagnosis should lead us to the root cause of the problem and treatment should be taken from thenceforth to better the condition and make sure that the patient gets a good night's sleep. Sleep apnea where a person loses proper sleep during the night due to respiratory problems could be one cause or Narcolepsy where the person has some neurological mal function that leads to poor sleep patterns or even RLS (restless leg syndrome) where in the patient cannot sleep well as he/she has some kind of sensation in the legs that needs them to move and thus disturbs the person from getting sufficient REM sleep during the night and so on.
All these disorders are contributing factors to a person's insomnia. To arrive at a proper diagnosis the problem is categorized into three patterns: one is to see if the person has RLS. RLS is typically seen during early evening and more apparent at night. People with this problem need to move their legs to get rid of that tingling sensation and while there is no cure and some medications can relieve it temporarily only to make it worse later, this is one disorder that could be the cause. Secondly there may be lifestyle factors like poor night time diet habits, sleep routines that stimulate instead of relax the individual, medications or stress all or few of which can lead to insomnia. Finally, due to some of the other factors there may be delayed sleep onset and early arousal thus limiting the quality of sleep that one gets and frequent sleep disturbances that can leave the person not getting adequate or quality sleep during the night.
Whatever the problem maybe the best way to combat your insomnia is to analyze which category one falls into and then go about treating those problems one by one to attain a good nights sleep. For most people insomnia goes away on its own if it is caused by a trauma or anxiety or is of a temporary nature. Getting into a relaxed bedtime routine that ensures a proper sleep schedule, sleep ambience, and a relaxing routine either with therapy or with home remedies like meditation and yoga or having a good cup of chamomile tea etc can help one to a great extent. If the problem is sleep apnea or other disorders then making a lifestyle change with emphasis on dietary changes can help to a degree. If it is some disorder like RLS that is difficult to treat then following a doctor's advise and taking his treatment plan step by step for optimum results may be the best course.
