RLS is a neurological iron deficient condition wherein the patient finds that during periods of inactivity there is a tingling or creepy crawly sensation in the legs. The sensation is so predominant that only movement can ease it. The symptoms are often seen early in the evening or late at night when there is little mobility or activity. People who have this problem hence face sleeplessness due to the urge to move once the sensation starts while they are asleep. Sleep discomfort, difficulty walking and stress are common symptoms. The disorder does not discriminate between genders and ages. If left untreated it can be debilitating and can worsen over a period of time. While the disorder is not pinpointed to any particular cause it is also believed to be due to some abnormalities in the brain especially the neurotransmitters that control movement in the limbs. While primary RLS has no known cause, secondary RLS is attributed to any or most of these factors like iron deficiency, neural damage, excessive use of medication, thyroid conditions, medications or kidney disorders and so on are probably the causes. Symptoms usually occur in the resting states and the person has an urge to move around to get some relief.
While there are no lab tests to determine and diagnose this condition it may be good to take a polysomnograph to get your sleep assessed, get a whole blood picture done to check for iron deficiencies, and also to get some nerve tests done to see if there is any disorder there that could be leading to this problem. While you complain of sleeplessness it is also important to mention to the doctor if you have any sensations in the legs during restful periods. While there are a few ways of relieving the sensation there is no actual cure for RLS. For symptoms of secondary RLS the best method of cure is to find the underlying cause and then treat that which in turn may relieve the RLS symptoms. There are a few home remedies that can help you with the sensation and relieve it to some extent.
Some of the home self help methods are controlling the intake of caffeine containing products, alcohol, avoiding smoking, excessive medication, avoiding heavy meals before bedtime, following an exercise routine, stress relieving methods like yoga or meditation, following a scheduled sleep pattern or routine can all aid in the home self help methods. If secondary RLS is determined then taking measures to cure the underlying cause can help to a great extent otherwise try and notice if the sensation or symptoms are triggered by some type of food and if so then to avoid those in your diet. Physiotherapy, relaxing bath techniques, exercises that target the legs and muscle relaxing exercises can all help to some degree. There are a few drugs that do give some form of relief but by far self-help is the best and most effective method to minimize the symptoms and to gain a good sleep.
