There are a lot of people who have different problems that they may or may not know exist. Some common abnormal sleep behaviors that are seen are talking or screaming in sleep, grinding teeth (bruxism), sleepwalking, bed-wetting, night sweats, sleep paralysis etc. Most of these are symptoms of an underlying disorder or are the result of some medication or a side effect. So before analyzing and following any pattern of treatment steps must be taken to make sure that these factors are dealt with by eliminating any underlying cause and if the cause is found then to start taking treatment for it. Most of these sleep anomalies are seen during the light sleep stage or the first stage of sleep and the second stage of sleep. The sleep pattern is such that the deep sleep stages are interspersed with first and second stages of sleep in between with increasing REM sleep as the night wears on and mostly into the early hours or the final lap of our sleep routine or before wake time. Most of these anomalies are seen during the REM stages of sleep and it is apt to get these observed or assessed to analyze at what stage these are occurring and how often and whether you (the person with the problem) can recall anything that has occurred, what if any factors are contributing to this anomaly and if so how to go about addressing that.
Sleepwalking, screaming and nightmares are often seen in children and while sleepwalking can run in families the others are mostly childhood related and will pass with age. Constant body movement can be due to RLS or PLMS both of which are limb related and can cause the person to move during sleep. These disorder occur when the person is not mobile or is in a restful state. While there is no cure for RLS there are few medication that help to some degree and self-help methods are proven to work well with this behavior. Eating during sleep is one form of abnormality that is seen in people who first have a sleep walking habit. This is dangerous as it has significant health risks like diabetes, obesity and dental problems that can lead to gastrointestinal disorders. Bruxism (tooth grinding), tongue biting, abnormal sexual behavior during sleep are often seen patterns that could be due to stress or anxiety or due to some underlying medical condition.
Night sweats are a common feature in people who have endocrinal disorders or are menopausal and can be mild to very severe such as drenching. Sleep headaches can be due to sleep apnea, sinus problems, migraine or any other such factors. Bedwetting is chiefly of two kinds, primary and secondary. While the former runs in families the latter may be due to some medical problem or some medication where the person is unable to control his/her sphincter muscles. Sleep paralysis is common in people with Narcolepsy and is called cataplexy where the person is aware of what is happening but is unable to move. Sleep paralysis can last from a few seconds to a few mins. Choking during sleep or shortness of breath can be due to Sleep apnea. Which is treatable
