Epileptic seizures during sleep are called nocturnal seizures. Seizures or episodes of epilepsy are irregular discharge of brain's nerve cells that result in temporary loss of co-ordination of motor functions. Seizures may have no known cause and sometimes things like a high fever can cause episodes in children but other than that there is no known cause of why they occur. Seizures that occur with a known cause are called secondary seizures and can be due to head injuries, cancerous growth, drug abuse, withdrawal symptoms from alcohol etc. sleep related seizures are much like sleep disorders since they have the same resultant symptoms of fogginess of thought, lack of concentration or alertness, but in affect may actually be experiencing a seizure that is temporarily interrupting general brain function.
Sleep seizures can result in many other conditions and a person who experiences an episode during sleep can have difficulty breathing or bed wetting or violent twitching or any other such occurrence. Any of these symptoms when they occur with precision when exposed to any factor can be suspected to be a seizure. There is no known group of individuals that are prone to this disorder it can affect anyone regardless of their age, sex or race. Epileptic attacks can be due to a number of factors like brain injury, recent chronic medical conditions or trauma, or as a reaction to low blood glucose levels etc. first and foremost it must be determined whether any sleep disorders that the person is facing is due to a sleep seizure and try to assess the underlying cause. To attend to this it is a must that one must try and find the root cause to do that we need to get medical help from a sleep center where they are fully equipped to service and attend to such cases with adequate staff and facilities to run the routine tests like full EEG during sleep and to make sure that there is a neurologist who can address the problem as and when it is diagnosed.
