Characterized by severe neuromuscular pain, fatigue, sleep disruption and often confused with similar sleep disorders, Fibromyalgia also known as muscular rheumatism has no known cures which worsens with the fact that most people who are affected by it are treated for other disorders due to its similarities with so many other diseases. Constant pain that lasts for over a period of 3 months or more, general fatigue during the day and in the afternoons, muscle weakness, and sleeplessness are the most common symptoms of FM patients. Though the cause is not known some research points to a genetically predisposition to the condition as also a physiological and mental reaction to an illness or a trauma. The disorder is characterized by the presence of certain tender spots or 18 places in the body where the muscles tend to tighten up and cause acute pain.
If the doctor is able to evaluate these tender spots and find at least 11 of these to be hurting then the person probably has FM, while this may not be a rule of the book, as some of the tender spots are also highlighted by pain that goes on and off so it is mandatory to get a thorough evaluation before embarking on any form of treatment or before deducing that the disorder may be something else like arthritis or chronic fatigue syndrome. Due to its similarities with other such similar disorders the process of diagnosis involves a series of symptomatic elimination of the probability of other disease and narrowing down to a possible FM disorder by using tests such as Polysomnography and observing latent symptoms associated with it. Common symptoms of Fibromyalgia are muscle pain for prolonged periods of time (over 3 months), tenderness in the neck shoulders and other tender spots, fatigue, sleeplessness, digestive disorders, depression and restlessness with tingling sensation in the limbs.
As with all sleep disorders lifestyle changes are mandatory in combating this problem. Food ingested must be rich in fiber to counter the digestive disorders, high in vitamin c to boost the immune system, contain omega3 fatty acids for pain relief and have mineral supplements like zinc for proper immune response. Avoid eating spicy food, alcohol, carbonated beverages, smoking etc. The cure must target pain relief and hence many people are known to use natural remedies to get relief, like massage therapy, aromatherapy and some forms of exercise that loosen up the muscles and relieve the tautness thus easing the pain this can be achieved by doing yoga or any stretching exercises that are known to help a great deal. Since fatigue and depression, abdominal discomfort and sleeplessness are a side effect of the pain these will get resolved when adequate measures are taken to combat the pain.
