Circadian rhythm refers to the body's internal clock that regulates the various functions of the body for a period of 24 hours, which concentrate on the sleep-wake cycle, temperature control and endocrinal system. Jet lag often seen during long hauls and exposure to different time zones and sleep disorders can play havoc with the rhythm causing an upset in the sleep wake cycle and thus tamper with the body clock. Sensitivity to factors like light and environment and consequently any alteration in the regular mechanism can affect the circadian rhythm. Neurological disorders like dementia, Alzheimer’s, working in shifts and social or lifestyle pressures can also tell upon the body's internal clock.

Most of the effect on the sleep wake cycle can result in sleeplessness, anxiety, headaches, and decreased performance, lack of concentration and digestive disorders. Getting medical help if there is severe loss of coordination or if there are chronic gastrointestinal problems and sleeplessness is a must. Getting a thorough evaluation and then undergoing tests like a sleep test, or CT Scan or MRI or eliminating probable neurological disorders can be a good way of identifying and resolving the problem. As with all sleep related disorders this also warrants some lifestyle changes and they can be following a regular sleep schedule, having a good bedtime routine and dietary changes as well as avoiding alcohol, sodas, spicy or allergenic foods etc.

undergoing therapy like chronotherapy (that helps adjust to a sleep schedule of your choice) bright light therapy and tuning the mind to environmental cues can help. Medications generally include, melatonin that promotes sleep, melatonin stimulants and short-term hypnosis. Modafinil is used for people who encounter this problem due to working in shifts. Maintaining a good sleep schedule and sleep hygiene, taking care of the general dietary plan and making sure not to add stimulants close to bedtime and also trying to avoid any shift in the regular lifestyle can help most people other wise there is always medication or natural therapies that can aid in fighting this disorder.
