While there has been study to indicate that some people are genetically predisposed to Narcolepsy recent studies have shown that there is a contributing factor in the environment to genetically susceptible individuals. Research shows that factors like BMI (body mass index), stress and immune response can be contributing factors to the onset of the disease. Studies by some Swiss researchers has lead to a finding that blocking the production of a neuropeptide (Orexin, which is found to be absent in the brains of narcoleptics) that maintains wakefulness, can lead to restful night's sleep and fewer bouts of naps during the day for sleep disorder patients.

The Swiss drug firm, Actelion that blocks the Orexin receptors in the brain so as to enable the person to get ample shut-eye, is developing a drug. While current drug tests don't point to any side effects or worsening of the catalectic aspect of the disorder, the drug is still under review before it comes to the market.
