Often confused due to the similarities in the symptoms, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia are two different disorders with common symptom in sleeplessness and fatigue, but the similarity ends with few shared symptoms. Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic, relentless pain for an extended period of time in the body's musculature that coupled with sleep depravation can result in fatigue, which in turn resembles the symptoms attributed to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. While the secondary symptoms stem from the fact that they are sleep related, FM has other factors that can enable us to diagnose the disorder like tingling sensation in the limbs, restlessness (that actually leads to sleep depravation) and tenderness in the body that is similar to arthritis and rheumatism save for the joint pains and inflammation.

Chronic fatigue on the other hand doesn't display any of these symptoms that are the trademarks of FM disorder. Diagnosing and determining the disorder though tricky can be done with simple elimination and deduction, as the disorder has similarities not only with CFS, but also with Lyme disease, arthritis, rheumatism etc. FM patients also have other problems during their sleep like bruxism (grinding of the teeth). CFS and FM are probably two aspects of a spectrum that distinguish each other with their base traits, CFS for fatigue and FM for pain. With no known cures and no laboratory based tests to determine the causes and the cures for these disorders the best method is to treat symptomatically with drugs and therapy
