Dietary changes can help patients with FM to a great extent since there is no known cure for the disorder other methods of reducing the symptoms and trying to get a good restful night of sleep can help to a large extent. Some of the main dietary habits that the patient has to look into are the ones that don't play havoc with the digestive system. Due to the disorder, the lack of sleep can add to indigestion, constipation and sometimes diarrhea. The basic diet plan to counter these symptoms would be to eat easily digestible foods rich in fiber and that do not tax the digestive system too much. Avoiding spicy or known food allergens that can irritate the bowel and cause other discomfort should be avoided. Low consumption of hard to digest foods like sugars and sweets, do away with caffeine filled products, colas, alcohol, saturated fats and high animal fat products.

Anything that is fresh like fruits vegetables, low animal fat and other whole foods like grains, legumes, foods with essential fatty acids (like omega 3 fatty acids found in cold water fish, nuts) are good. A wholesome vitamin supplement that adds to the diet like vitamin C (boosts the immune system), Omega 3 fatty acids (for pain relief), mineral supplements like zinc (for better immune response) and magnesium (for pain relief) can add to an effective treatment plan. Sensitivity to certain types of food must also be taken into account and food allergens are to be avoided. Diet plan must be watched to see if there is any adverse reaction and extreme changes should be avoided or done under supervised conditions. Since pain is the main cause and sleep depravation causes most of the other symptoms diet should revolve around a plan that can target these two issues thus reducing the symptoms to a minimum.
