As the early stage symptoms of FM are often seen to coincide with other diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, CFS and other such diseases and diagnosis being only limited to symptomatic evaluation any lab test that determines this condition at this stage can be a really helpful tool in understanding the underlying nature of the disorder. Although there are many lab test involved in trying to determine whether a person has FM or not these are mostly to tests that help eliminate the presence of other disorders and not conclusive tests to detect FM. A recent advancement in this field is the APA (anti-polymer Assay) test, which detects certain abnormal polymers that are present in the immune system of patients that complain of FM symptoms.

This might be the first authentic laboratory based diagnostic aid for this condition. The APA which is still under review may well be the test that could give us an insight into the symptomatic auto immune response of people suffering from this disorder and thus help us differentiate between conditions that seem to carry similar symptoms like RLS, Sclerosis and other disorders. The presence of abnormal anti-polymer antibodies and the concentration of them, in the blood stream of patients is an indicator of the severity of the disorder. Studies are still underway and this is not yet a fully functional laboratory method of diagnosis.
