Trigger points are highly painful spots in the muscle bonds and these regions are used in this therapy. The therapy is a means of applying pressure, on these points of the body to relieve the pain. Trigger points can be the cause of debilitating pain and are systemically associated with Fibromyalgia. Common causes can be due to extreme exhaustion, trauma over usage of muscles or accidents. The pain forms muscle knots and stiffness that is accompanied with this along with acute pain. There are two types of trigger points, Active trigger points or latent trigger points. Active trigger points are the ones that cause acute or constant pain, while latent trigger points are taut muscles that are waiting for a trauma or over usage to get triggered and become active.

The therapy targets at relieving this pain by applying pressure and loosening up the muscle tautness in these areas. It is also a progressive method to adapt the muscle to a more relaxed state thus reducing the stiffness, pain, and increasing flexibility and range of motion. As these are not visible through any tests therapy is the best alternative. Trigger points that are neglected can generate secondary tender spots and cause pain. The therapy involves applying pressure for brief periods of time (about 10 seconds) in rapid succession so as to release endorphins (neurotransmitters that have pain relieving properties) and desensitizing the spots. Treatment shows instant results but chronic cases may need more sessions and some light form of exercise like stretching and flexibility postures may aid in releasing the tautness in the muscles.
